ADHD/AuDHD
Neurodiversity Affirming services
Neurodiverse counselling has become a thing that many folks are offering but how do you decide who really knows what they are doing?
Being neurodiverse affirming is not about improving executive functioning skills, emotional regulation, and holding space for the complexities of navigating a world designed by and for neurotypical folks. It's about understanding the nuances including difficulties in separating personal value from productivity, relationships, friendships, rejection sensitivity, justice sensitivity, self-care burnout, the barriers and pitfalls of learning self-compassion and unmasking, finding balance, learning boundaries, being able to stay invested in creative endeavors without losing one's passion, difficulties in consistency, learning how to be present and relax, and a variety of other factors that can be challenging to traverse.
What we offer at ADSUM:
Specialized Expertise: We have extensive training (including being an ADHD-certified clinical services provider) and experience in working with individuals with ADHD/AuDHD. We have a deep understanding of the unique needs and struggles many experience. We see each person that chooses to work with us as being the expert on themselves and collaborate to explore what works or doesn't work based on that individual's knowledge of themselves.
Personalized Approach: We recognize that each person is unique and the expression of their ADHD/AuDHD may not fit the textbook definitions of ADHD/AuDHD symptoms. Our counselling is tailored to the individual and centred around honouring each person's knowledge, likes, dislikes, needs, wants, passions, and goals.
Comprehensive Support: We offer a wide range of strategies and techniques that we are comfortable and confident in adapting to meet the specific needs of the individual. We take a holistic approach by exploring not only expanding one's resources and skills but also encouraging a deeper understanding of your nervous system, neurobiology, and physiological needs so that people are more empowered to recognize and attend to themselves before their system shuts down or hits overwhelm.
Emotional Wellbeing: Many neurodiverse folks can struggle with frustration, low self-esteem, burnout, anxiety, dispair, depression, and dissociation/depersonalization. Many also experience complex PTSD and relational wounding. Counselling at Adsum involves exploring how these things are impacting sense of okayness and ways to surf the waves with more skill and confidence. We believe that addressing both the practical and emotional aspects of neurodiversity is crucial for long-term success.
